Xplor International has announced the recipients of its 2007 awards and EDP recognitions.
Highlighted at the opening ceremony of the Xplor Document University annual conference in Miami Beach, Florida (USA) , Xplor recognised the lifetime achievement, chairperson's, innovator of the year, technology application and Xplorer of the year award winners.
The year's lifetime achievement award, new for this year, has gone to Brian Platte, an individual who had an impact on the direction, growth and progress of the electronic document industry, said Xplor.
Formerly the chief technical officer of IBM, Platte was an Xplor and industry advocate for many years and reached beyond the boundaries of what many thought possible in terms of digital output, added the organisation.
Platte was also the architect of one of the industry's print languages and was known as the 'father' of AFP.
Even though he died suddenly last December, Platte's contribution to the industry will not be forgotten, added Xplor.
The chairperson's award is presented to someone who, in the opinion of the Xplor chairperson, has had a significant impact on furthering the Xplor mission.
The winner, Gustavo Muratore, is responsible for initiating the formation of the latest Xplor chapter.
Through his efforts and the support of his company, as well as others, the chapter held its first meeting, which attracted over 200 delegates representing over 100 companies.
Muratore is general manager of Impripost Technologies and the founding member of Xplor Argentina.
Mike Taylor of Information Manufacturing and Anna Bradley of Criterion 508 Solutions each won the innovator of the year award for their significant contributions to the electronic document systems industry.
Xplor said that they took it upon themselves to tackle, not only a technical issue, but also a social one.
Through their collaborative efforts and tenacity, they worked together to provide PDF accessibility via searchable text, which opened the doors to document and web accessibility for people with disabilities.
The technology application of the year award this year was given for an imaginative application of current technology that establishes an industry direction.
Humana, a publicly traded health benefits company, has been awarded for its work that provides customers with one of the most comprehensive uses of transactional data, in Xplor's opinion.
As a result, insurance customers can see printed monthly statements of what they paid for, a list of prescriptions and refills, as well as an image of the medications, all in colour.
Using products from Xplor member companies, Humana's application provides a visual roadmap of customer medications that can be shared with doctors and care givers.
The Xplorer of the year award is given to recognise an Xplor member for his or her contribution to the association during the year.
Rob Williams, managing partner of Focus Legal Solutions, was award the honour because of the work he and his company donated to support the Xplor conference and for Williams chairing and organising the digital print, colour and variable data course at the Xplor Document University.
In addition, Xplor went on to recognised those that have participated in the EDP designation scheme, which is an award for proficiency, experience and commitment.
EDP personnel promote and enhance the industry through continuing individual education, knowledge sharing and mentoring others in the certification process.
To date, over 500 EDPs have been certified worldwide, with numbers increasing ever year.
The 2007 recipients included Bert Alblas of Cendris, Steve Biancaniello and Michelle Peer of Prinova, Marcel Brandsen from Fortis Verzekeringen Nederland and Kevin Browne of Gilmore DocuLink International.
Dadolog's Hans Dickerscheid also received EDP recognition, along with Canada Post Corporation's Omer Doucet and Pierre Guenette, as well as Detlev Gellermann from Document Dialog, Ben Hampton of DSN, Frank Heuvel of Xerox (Nederland) and Jaap Jacobs from ING Groep.
Frank Janssen (Aia Software), Chris Knight (Jersey Post), Kent Lewis (Exstream Software), Michael Niederjohann (Exstream Software Germany), Gerald Lankamp (SNS Bank Nederland), Michael Ricking (Edmond Research and Development) and Rebecca Rodgers (D R Rodgers and Associates) received their accreditations.
The final recipients were Nico Schoone (Aia Software B V), Marc Seidler (Dokument Dialog) and Ylja Stunnenberg (Tridion Corporation Services).
The Xplor Document University annual conference eas staged in conjunction with the Graphics of the Americas exhibition.
