Handheld Spectrophotometer Eases Scanning

X-Rite has launched its Pulse Colour Elite System, claimed to be the industry's first and only low cost, highly accurate and truly portable spectrophotometer.
Previewed at Drupa last May, Pulse is said to bridge the gap between design and print.
The Pulse handheld system is said to enable the operator to scan in either direction, at a comfortable speed.
It can be used tethered to a computer via USB cable or untethered, for remote scanning or patch reading.
That way, claimed X-Rite, work can be measured wherever conditions are best - in a workroom, or a studio, for instance.
Its on-board memory can store up to 3,000 patches, with enough battery life for 10 profiles and data can be quickly uploaded at a workstation for easy on-screen colour management claimed the company.
All parts of Pulse Color Elite are said to work together to reduce errors.
For example, by including data in the targets, Pulse's integrated Pathfinder guide protects the media by elevating the scanner above the paper said X-Rite.
The optional backer board provides a CGATS and ANSI-standard conforming surface for optimal accuracy.
Pulse is powered by profiling software and its 'wizard-like' interface walks the operator through the profiling process for a wide range of colour input and output devices.
The Pathfinder's alignment guide, calibration plaque, spot reader, pulsing indicator light and scanning-speed strip are built in - so there are no parts to lose.
X-Rite said that the handheld device was based on extensive workplace hand and motion studies.
It believes the product supports the way users really work by complementing their natural grip and encouraging comfortable movement.
When not in use, each component can be stored in the custom desktop storage unit.
Jim Weaver, vice president of marketing and production development at X-Rite said: "Our advanced technology team researched and analysed how handheld systems were being used worldwide.
We visited hundreds of customers and commissioned independent third party research to pinpoint the challenges many printing professionals encounter today.
Our team responded with a technology break-through, engineering the ultimate portable colour measurement solution on the market.
