Yupo Corporation America has announced that Linda Nagel from Imagine That Studios (Montrose, CO) has been selected as the Designer's Choice winner of Yupo's Wally Awards for her watercolour paintings.
The collection of watercolour artworks that Nagel submitted to the Wally Awards aims to bring vibrancy and depth to a range of everyday subjects, including a grape still life, waterfall landscape, meeting of strangers, rooster and a donkey, amongst others, said Yupo.
Nagel is described as working with a vivid and spontaneous colour palette of bright reds, greens, blues, yellows and purples, as well as a darker range of greys, whites, black and browns, to bring the subject matter to life.
Yupo said that its 100 per cent waterproof synthetic paper offered the artist specific drying properties that make it suitable for her artwork.
Like other Wally Award winners, Nagel will receive a US$1,000 cash prize, a customised Wally Award statue designed by illustrator Bill Mayer and a US$500 gift certificate toward Punchstock photography.
Winning submissions are featured on the Yupo website.
Nagel explained: "When painting on Yupo paper, the watercolours are not lost in the paper; they float on top and playfully interact.
In addition, when the colours dry on Yupo, they are as vivid as they are when wet, which was important to bring my concepts to life.
It is also easy to make changes to brush strokes on Yupo, which gave me the artistic freedom to try new techniques and colour combinations." Entries for the 2007 Wally Awards will be accepted from June 10.
Three winners will be chosen by an independent panel of industry professionals.
A fourth designer's choice winner will be chosen via separate online voting.
To enter the 2007 Wally Awards candidates must first register at the Yupo website, or at Yupo's stand at the HOW Design Conference.
Entrants must include a short description explaining why Yupo paper was chosen for the job.
Six printed, illustrated, or converted samples must be submitted to Yupo Corporation America and all submissions become the property of Yupo Corporation.
Three winners will be announced in November or December based on functionality, originality and creativity.
Semi-finalists will be entered in to the designer's choice category and a winner will be chosen via on-line voting in March 2008.
