Zechini will present at Drupa 2004 a brand new folding and sewing machine developed in partnership with Xerox, The Millennium Book.

The new system for folding and sewing digitally printed books has been designed to be connected in-line with Xerox's Docutech range, especially with the new extra-large format (36,5cm x 50cm) printer that will be showed in overview at Drupa.

Millennium Book consists of a collecting station where the printed sheets from Docutech are collected for the production of sewed signatures of 12, 24 or 32 pages, in preparation for making digitally printed books.

The first folding station folds the sets from the collecting station in the middle in order to be prepared for sewing.

At the sewing station the sets are turned through 90 degrees and are sewed in the middle.

Then a second folding station folds the sets.

At the exit station, the signatures are pressed within two cylinders to eradicate air, before they are sent to the stacker where the signatures are piled in book blocks to allow the operator to put it in the binding machine.

Because of its job recovery device, in case of paper jam Millennium Book is claimed to avoid any wastage.

Its software recognizes the last signature produced and restarts the job from that one and in that way the operator will always find the right signature on the Exit Station.

Working with the extra large format used by the new Docutech, Millennium Book increases the production of 17cm x 24cm and 15cm x 21cm format books by a claimed 100%.

The system is said to be capable of producing from eight-page up to 32-page signatures.

Even though Millennium Book has been expressly designed to work in line with Xerox's Docutech, Zechini said the system could also work off-line with an automatic feeding device.

The company also added that off-line capability is also suitable for colour offset as well as digitally printed books.

Millennium Book will be presented at the Xerox stand at Drupa in Hall 13.
