Paper Hardness Test Essential For Clean Print

A Zwick Roell product story

For the development of high-quality offset printing paper, knowledge of the force, versus indentation performance during printing is essential for clean print.

For the development of high-quality offset printing paper, knowledge of the force, versus indentation performance during printing is essential for clean print.

That is according to Zwick, which added that missing raster points and blurry print are undesired.

The compressibility test, in which a specimen of printing paper is loaded up to the nominal load, provides an insight in to the performance of the paper during offset printing.

Both compressive force and indentation are measured during the test and a very high-resolution indentation measurement system is necessary to measure values, which are typically in the range of 10microns, added Zwick.

The Zwick Roell system originates in traditional hardness testing where similar indentations are measured.

A compression platen with floating bearing is loaded by a ball joint and presses on to the paper and the indentation in to the paper is measured with a resolution of 20nm.

Zwick added that the indentation measurement system is totally integrated in to the hardness measurement head.

The company added that users will benefit from the quick-change indenter, automatic reconfiguration for different specimen thicknesses, automated test sequence control and result evaluation, which guarantees a precise and reliable testing process.

The tests are evaluated automatically using Zwick's Testxpert test software and the results and required statistics can be presented automatically in a clearly laid out report.

The test report can be customised to customer requirements and, in addition, it is possible to transfer the data to external databases or LIMS systems, it is claimed.

The Zwick hardness testing system, with hardness measurement head, can be used in standard universal testing machines, as well as in automatic testing systems and a production control option - for example 'pass' and 'fail' tests are also possible.

The indentation and depth measurement system corresponds to accuracy class 0.2 of ISO 9513.
